Visiting Omaha Beach on D-Day's 80th Anniversary

On the 80th anniversary of D-Day, I had the profound experience of visiting Omaha Beach. Traveling from California to France, I was filled with anticipation to see the historic sites portrayed in movies like Saving Private Ryan and The Longest Day.

Starting in Paris, I made my way north to Normandy. Due to the presence of President Biden and President Macron, the roads to Caen and the beaches were closed, so I had to walk part of the way. The atmosphere was surreal: people from around the world gathered, many dressed in WWII-era U.S. Army uniforms, with jeeps heading to Omaha Beach.

In the English Channel, warships were visible, and vintage planes flew overhead, their hum a poignant reminder of the past. The fortifications and bunkers from the unfinished Atlantic Wall were remarkably well-preserved. It was heartening to see the locals honoring this significant date with such respect and attention, avoiding excessive displays of patriotism.

Standing on Omaha Beach on this historic day was a moving experience, offering a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made and the importance of preserving our shared history.
